Free yourself from the pressure that weighs on you
Do you know the feeling when your neck is so stiff that it almost cracks? Or when you're coming down with a cold and your head feels heavy? In our modern everyday lives in Winterthur and Zurich - whether at the desk or in the cockpit - stress often settles as "armor" in the upper back. Blood circulation stops, waste products accumulate.
Gua Sha therapy at FLY TCM is like a "reset button" for your tissue. It is one of the oldest and most effective methods of Asian folk medicine for literally bringing stagnation to the surface and draining it out.
What is Gua Sha? (More than just a beauty trend)
You may know Gua Sha from social media as a gentle facial massage. In therapeutic TCM, however, it is much more than that. The name is made up of "Gua" (scraping) and "Sha" (sand/redness).
I use special scrapers made of buffalo horn, jade or porcelain and apply pressure to your oiled skin - usually along the muscle strands on your back and neck. The aim is not cosmetic, but deep medical detoxification.
The secret of the "Sha": Why blushing is good
The treatment often results in red to purple dots or stripes under the skin. This looks wild at first glance, but it's exactly what you want! I call these discolorations "Sha".
This is old, congested blood and metabolic products that are brought to the surface from the depths by scraping. Once they are there, your immune system can recognize and break them down. The effect is often immediately noticeable: the blood circulation in the treated area increases massively (studies speak of up to 400%), the pain subsides and the head is cleared.
Areas of application: When is Gua Sha the solution?
Gua Sha is ideal for "getting things moving". In my practice in Winterthur, I use it in three main areas:
1. persistent neck & back pain
For "tech neck" (cell phone neck), chronic shoulder stiffness or pain between the shoulder blades. Scraping often loosens tight fascia faster than massage alone.
2. onset of a cold & immune system
Do you feel a scratchy throat or aching limbs? According to TCM, Gua Sha on the upper back opens the pores and expels the "pathogenic factor" (wind/cold) before it can take hold. A classic home remedy in Asia.
3. headaches & migraines
Tension headaches often move from the trapezius muscle up into the skull. Gua Sha draws the heat and pressure downwards.
Who is this method suitable for?
Gua Sha is perfect for people who are looking for quick relief and have no problem with temporary skin markings. It is particularly popular with:
- Athletes: For rapid muscle regeneration.
- Busy workers: To shed the "stress rucksack".
- Allergy sufferers: To relieve the airways (e.g. hay fever).
Safety & contraindications
Gua Sha is safe, but intense. I do not use it for:
- Taking blood thinners (Marcumar etc.) or blood clotting disorders.
- On sunburn, open wounds or severe acne.
- Immediately after an operation or in cases of extreme physical weakness.
Procedure & costs in Winterthur
I usually incorporate Gua Sha into a longer treatment (e.g. combined with acupuncture or Tui Na). The pure scraping time often only lasts 5-15 minutes, as it has a very intensive effect. I use high-quality oil to protect your skin.
The costs are included in the time required (tariff 590) and are generally covered by supplementary insurance for complementary medicine (EMR). Please clarify your cover in advance.

Make an appointmentFrequently asked questions
Does the scraping hurt?
It is intense, but usually not painful in the bad sense. It feels more like a strong scratching or a deep massage. It can pinch a little in places where there are a lot of blockages. However, I always ask you how you feel and adjust the pressure immediately. The liberating feeling afterwards outweighs this by far.
How long do the red spots remain visible?
This is individual and depends on how severe the stagnation was. The redness (petechiae) usually fades within 2 to 5 days. If you plan to wear a backless dress or go to the sauna in the next few days, please let us know in advance!
Is that a bruise?
Visually it resembles a bruise, but medically it is something else. With a bruise, vessels are injured by blunt force. With Gua Sha, metabolic products are pressed out of the tissue in a controlled manner without permanently damaging the vessel walls. It is a healing process, not an injury.
Can I shower afterwards?
I recommend protecting the treated areas from draughts and direct cold for approx. 24 hours (wear a scarf!). Showering is okay, but please be warm and not ice cold immediately afterwards. The pores are open, so the body is more sensitive for a short time.
Does Gua Sha also help the face?
Yes, there is the gentle “Facial Gua Sha” for lymphatic drainage and firming. In TCM pain therapy, however, we usually work on the back and neck with more pressure (“Body Gua Sha”). If you are interested in the gentle facial version, please contact me – I will show you techniques to use at home.
